How does the TOEFL work?

The Test of English as a Foreign Language is a standardized assessment tool used to gauge non-native speakers’ proficiency in the language when they apply to universities where English is the primary language. More than 11,000 universities and other organizations across more than 190 nations and territories accept the test. Among the many well-known English language assessments administered worldwide are the TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Assessment English, and Trinity College London exams.

In essence, there are three types of tests: one is Paper based Test (PBT), second is Computer based Test. (CBT), and third is Internet based Test. (IBT)

The writing portion of the exam has two tasks: an integrated one and an independent one that gauge a test taker’s proficiency in writing in an academic context. Examinees read a passage on a scholarly topic and then listen to a speaker describe it in the integrated assignment. After then, the test-taker summarizes the key ideas from the listening passage and clarifies how they connect to the main ideas of the reading text. Instead of just stating personal preferences or choices, the test-taker is required to produce an essay in the independent task that explains their perspective or choice.

There are 25 activities that involve spotting errors and 15 that involve accurately completing sentences in the Structure and Written Expression part. More difficult questions carry two points.

There are fifty questions concerning reading passages in the Reading Comprehension portion. More difficult questions carry two points.

There are three sections in the listening portion. Thirty questions concerning brief conversations are in the first one. Eight questions concerning lengthier conversations are in the second section. Twelfth and final section: twelve questions about seminars or lectures. More difficult questions carry two points.
